Evolution of Apple

,Apple Inc., formerly Apple Computer Co., is an American multinational ,technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California. The company designs, develops, and sells ,consumer electronics,personal computers, online services, computer software, and is a ,digital distributor of media content. Apple Computer Co. was launched on April 1, 1976.

With a ,market capitalization of more than a trillion dollar at the time of this writing, Apple is among, if not the most valuable brand in the world.  Apple’s core product lines are the ,iPhone; a ,smartphone,iPad; a ,tablet computer, iMac; a PC, the Apple Watch; smartwatch, ,iPod; a ,portable media players, the Apple TV; a digital media player,  and the AirPods wireless earbuds and ,Macintosh computer line. Apple’s software includes the iOS, the iTunes media player, macOS, the Safari web browser and the iLife and iWork creativity and productivity suites while its online services include the iOS App Store, Mac App Store, Apple Music, iTunes Store, iMessage, and iCloud. The company also has a chain of flagship retail stores known as ,Apple Stores where you can purchase their product.

Apple is known for its incredible product design, led by Chief Design Officer (CDO) ,Jony Ive. But Apple’s hardware design has come a long way to be the sleek minimalism it’s known for today. Some devices ,turned out to be a disaster but now they became a pioneer in making smartphones and tablets a household necessity.

Apple’s first device was a computer. They launched their very first Apple computer in April of 1976, the same year the company was established. It all began with this. It came with a typewriter which could be connected to screen i.e. it had TV display compatibility. It came with 4 KB of RAM. Then it costed $666.66 (today’s value is over $2000 and sold 200 units (approx.).

The Apple II introduced in 1977, by comparison, was much better-looking than its predecessor. For $1298, you got a redesigned TV interface, memory display, 8 expansion slots, graphics and color. It was the platform with the first “killer application” function for business: VisiCalc, a spreadsheet program for financial calculation.

Fast-forward to 1980, Apple released the Apple III, a business-oriented personal computer. It run the ,Apple SOS operating system, it was a successor to the ,Apple II series, but was considered a failure in the market. It was designed to provide key features business users wanted in a desktop computer, a true typewriter-style upper/lowercase keyboard. It had an 80-column display.

In 1981 Apple introduced apple pro file. It was the first hard disk drive (HDD) produced by Apple.

In 1983, Apple computer’s first GUI (graphic user interface) computer was released. In this year they also introduced mouse, keyboard, icon, and desktop. Lisa was a ,desktop computer developed by ,Apple which was a first to use a mouse. It was released on January 19, 1983. Its cost price was $10k (25k today).

In Jan 1984, Apple released its first personal computer, the Macintosh: its most successful product yet. Many versions were released after its initial release: Apple II c, Macintosh 512k, Macintosh XL, Macintosh plus, etc. It came with a built-in screen and mouse. The machine also featured a GUI, an operating system known as System 1 (the earliest version of Mac OS), and a number of software programs, two interfaces including the word processor MacWrite and the graphics editor MacPaint. Macintosh was the beginning of a “revolution in personal computing.” After its successful release, Apple started to be recognized in the consumer hardware products.

In 1987 came the Apple Newton. The Newton was the predecessor to mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad.

Then came the Portable Macintosh in 1991, Macintosh PowerBook 140 was released. It was Apple’s first laptop. The clamshell-like design would be prominently featured in every Apple laptop since then.

The Newton Message Pad released in 1993 marked Apple’s break into the mobile devices industry, though the Newton itself was a flop.

The PowerBook 500 was released in 1994 and it was a lot less clunky than the Mac Portable.

The Year 1997 also marked the 20th anniversary of Macintosh. This was the year Steve Jobs came back to apple and a year later the company introduced a new personal computer, the iMac. The iMac was a strong seller, and Apple quickly went to work on developing a suite of digital tools to be included in future devices for its users, including the video editor iMovie, the photo editor iPhoto, and the music player iTunes, These were available as a software bundle named as iLife. Then came the iMac G3 in 1998, which attracted consumers with a sleek plastic case, round body, and various color options. It was the first iMac with USB port and no floppy disk drive.


The next year in 1999 Apple came out with the iBook, which looked like a clamshell. It was the first mainstream computer designed with integrated wireless networking. The iBook snow laptop was updated in 2001. By now, Apple had largely abandoned the colors used in previous iMacs and focused on low key colors. Same year, they introduced iTunes and Mac OS X. They also opened the first Apple retail store at Tyson corner center.


Same year Apple released its biggest game-changer since the Macintosh: the iPod. IPod, a portable music player that allowed users to store “1000 songs in your pocket.” The first music player to go all digital. Its wheel actually spun around. It came with 5 GB data. By 2015, Apple had sold 390 million units.


In 2002, Apple also released eMac. The eMac or education Mac was an all-in-one ,Macintosh desktop computer targeted to facilitate the ,education market.

In 2003 Apple released the PowerBook G4, its first aluminum-body laptop. Apple also released a titanium version of the same device.

The Mac Mini came out in 2005. It provided consumers an alternative to tower-style desktops.

iPod Shuffle

This all-in-one ,iMac was the “the cheapest, most affordable Mac ever”. iPod shuffle was also introduced.

iPod  nano

The iPod Nano released in 2005 unseated the iPod Mini. An era of ultra-small MP3 players thus began.

MacBook Pro

The first MacBook Pro came out in 2006. It had in built ISight webcam and an infrared sensor for Apple remote. It used the same design of the ,PowerBook G4 but with ,Intel Core ,processors and introduced the ,MagSafe, a magnetic power connector designed to detach easily when yanked. Now the MacBook Pro is Apple’s flagship laptop.


In 2007 Apple shocked consumers with revelation of the first-generation iPhone. They got rid of the keypad and the phone came with huge screen and limited button. At that time, they also announced Apple Computer Inc., would now be known as “Apple Inc.”, because the company would from then shift its emphasis from computers to consumer electronics. . The company sold over 270,000 iPhone units during the first day of sales, and the device was called “a game changer for the industry”.

iPod Touch

By 2007, the iPod was on its sixth generation it was classified as the “iPod Classic”. IPod Touch was introduced in the same year. The iPod Touch is a brand of ,iOS-based multi-purpose ,mobile device with a ,touchscreen-controlled ,user interface. The iPod Touch belongs to ,iPod family. It can connect to the Internet only through ,Wi-Fi and does not use ,cellular network data, thus it is not a ,smartphone but it can be used as ,digital camera,web browser, a ,music player, note-logger, and ,handheld gaming device.

MacBook Air

The MacBook Air came out in 2008, making the MacBook Pro look chunky by comparison. The MacBook Air was the thinnest computer available at the market at that time. It is also the first apple computer with an option Solid-state drive (SSD).

In 2008 Apple released the iPhone 3G, which looked fairly similar to the original version. But it introduced GPS and 8G to iPhone and App store. It also introduced iPod Touch 2nd gen. and iPod Nano.

By 2009 the iMac had matured into having an aluminum uni-body design. Also released iPhone 3GS with video recording, voice control and had a 3mp camera.


In 2010 came the iPad, which appeared as being just a larger version of the iPhone. It came with a 9.7” screen. The iPad ran the same touch-based operating system as the iPhone, and all iPhone apps and functions were compatible with the iPad. The iPad was a great success and continues to dominate the tablet market to this date.

2010 also saw the unveiling of the second generation of Apple’s set-top box. Apple goes wireless, selling a wireless trackpad, keyboard, mouse and external hard drive. They also introduced iPhone 4 with Retina display.

The iPhone 4s, released in 2011, was a slimmer version of its predecessor. They introduced iPhone 4 with 1080p video recording and Siri and iPad with camera. Siri was introduced in this year.


In 2012 Apple unveiled the third-generation MacBook Pro, also known as the Retina MacBook Pro. Apple unveiled it at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 11, 2012. One of the most highlighted features is MacBook Pro’s 2,880 x 1,800 Retina Display. Retina Display is defined as having a “pixel density so high your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels”.

iPad Air

Apple also released the iPad Air. Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 on Sept. 12, 2012 in San Francisco. The new smartphone features a 4-inch display, 4G LTE, 1080p HD video quality, 720p HD front-facing video, panoramic photos, a new Lightening connector and ear pods. It was the first time the company changed the size of smartphone since it was originally introduced in 2007

In 2013 Apple released a couple of product updates including the iPhone 5C, 5s. The colorful, lower priced iPhone 5c couldn’t perform as better as Apple’s iPhone 5s. The iMac got a face-lift, too.

Between 2013-2014 Apple acquired PrimeSense and Beats by Dr. Dre.

In 2014, Apple pay was introduced. They also released various versions of iPhone 6 series, iMac w/ Retina 5k display, iPad Air 2, and iPad Touch mini. Apple unveiled the Apple Watch: a wearable tech.

In 2015, the Apple Watch was first introduced during an Apple special event at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts on September 9, 2014 in Cupertino, California, but the devices wasn’t released until the following spring. Apple Watch is a line of ,smartwatches which incorporates ,fitness tracking, inbuilt heartbeat sensor, 8 GB storage, and ,health-oriented capabilities with integration with ,iOS and other Apple products and services. The Apple Watch became available to the public in April 2015. It was released in two sizes and a range of styles and finishes including 18K gold.

iPad Pro

iPad Pro was also released same year. Apple’s largest tablet yet, the iPad Pro came with a 12.9” screen and smart keyboard.


IPhone 7 and 7 Plus debuted in September 2016 with dual camera, portrait mode. It was introduced with removed headphone jack. Meanwhile, Apple watch series 2 added inbuilt GPS, increased brightness and 50 m water resistance. AirPods was also introduced. A new MacBook Pro, with the Touch Bar was also unveiled.

In 2017, iMac with 1tb storage was introduced. IPhone 8 plus with wireless charging was introduced. In March, Apple unveiled a special red edition iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus in collaboration with PRODUCT (RED), a nonprofit that works to combat HIV and AIDS in Africa. Same year, the new $999 iPhone X with Face ID racial recognition technology was introduced.


In 2018, HomePod a smart speaker was introduced. It adapts to its location and delivers high-fidelity audio to its listener. Its connection with Apple Music and Siri creates an entirely new way to discover and interact with music at home.

In 2019, Air Pods 2 with added Siri access and wireless charging case was introduced. IPhone 11 pro max with three 12 MP HDR Lenses offering wide, ultra-wide and telephoto lenses was introduced.

In 2020, they ,launched a cheapest $400 iPhone called ,the iPhone SE and, a new ,,iPad Pro with sensors for augmented reality. They have a lot more in the pipeline that we can’t do anything but wait for their spectacular announcement.
