The Greatest Medical Inventions

Since many years, technology and medical field have gone hand in hand for saving millions of life. As the year has passed, the development in the field of medical technology has continued from the development of antibiotics to the extraction of DNA, PCR technology and many more. However, some of the greatest medical inventions have been introduced here though all the inventions and innovations in medical technology are equally important.

1. The Artificial Heart

An artificial heart is a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) which has been designed and invented in order to support failing heart. The artificial heart (the Jarvik 7) was invented by Robert Jarvik and successfully implanted in 1982. Since then this medical invention has been boon as the savior from heart disease, one of the deadliest and leading cause of death in many countries including the United Stated. 2. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computerized Tomography (CT)

These techniques are the standard procedures that have significant impact on healthcare. MRI is a medical imaging technique that is being used for observation of anatomy and physiological processes of human body used in radiology. MRI scanners are instrumented with strong magnetic field gradients and the radio waves for the generation of images of organs in the body. CT scan is similar to MRI but it uses computer processed combinations of X-ray measurements that are taken from various angles, to produce cross-sectional images. Since, introduction in 1970 s, CT scanning of the head is typically used for the detection of tumors, infraction, calcifications, hemorrhage and bone trauma. As compared to CT scans, MRI provides superior information to confirm a diagnosis of various disorders like, neoplasm, vascular disease, cervicomedullary lesions or intracranial pressure disorders.

Based on these technologies doctors can examine and inspect detailed parts of the body individually, and thus generated 3-D image allows identifying internal trauma or irregularities quickly and accurately.

3. Laser surgeries

Laser surgeries were firstly introduced to correct vision. However, today this technology has diverse fields, across many medical and cosmetic procedures. Basically, Laser eye surgery, LASIK (laser-assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery due to which the correction of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism is possible. The surgery performed by an Ophthalmologist uses a laser (microkerotome) that reshapes the eye’s cornea and visual acuity is improved. LASIK technology has been one of the greatest medical inventions that has provided a long-lasting alternative to proper who are rid of wearing eye glasses or contact lenses.

Besides this, Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation “LASER” is also used in cosmetic dermatology, or for the removal of precancerous lesions and to reshape the disorders focusing on even a small area of body.

4. Robotic Surgery

It is one of the milestones in medical field. Robotic surgery is used to perform minimally invasive procedures and to aid the surgeon with precision, control and flexibility during surgery. These robots were first introduced in the late 1980s with laparoscopic procedures and with advancement, today’s ‘da Vinci’ robot has been a savior which has treated more than 775,000 patients that has resulted to only minimal scarring and only few remarks on the body after surgery. Such technology allows for greater accuracy and precision with less post recovery time. However, it has raised the major questions, of eventually replacing human surgeons.


One of the recently introduced most advanced gene-editing technology is CRISPR (Clustered Regulatory Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats). It is used for manipulation of genes as it works by harnessing the natural processes of the immune systems of bacterial cells of invading viruses. By modification of gene some of the biggest threat to our health such as cancer and HIV, could be no longer threat and could overcome in a matter of years.

Apart from above mentioned 5 greatest inventions in the field of medical technology there are lot more to be added to the list.
